Final Project

My final project is going to be a solo project. I am going to do a video project.

It is going to be a video of the intermural floor hockey championship game. I am going to record parts of the game and do some play-by-play. I will also talk to players and have them explain how they did what they did and what their thoughts on the game were. I am also going to try and incorparite still photos as well.

Video Project

As the wind whirled the dirt on the infield sprayed the outfield grass, a place the ball would never reach.

Sara Fetterhoff, a pitcher for the Lyndon State Hornets softball team stood atop the hill facing home plate. Forty feet away stood Sebastion Lury, a reporter for the Critic. His assignment, face Fetterhoff, the softball teams best pitcher.
Perched atop the mound grasping the ball in her hand, Fetterhoff stared at Lury like a Hawk getting ready to retrieve its dinner.

Lury stood in at the plate awaiting the first offer. The pitcher released the ball and before he knew what happened Lury was searching for the ball, strike one. Another strike whistled by his bat, then a third, had there been an umpire he would have come out of his crouch and screamed, “strike three, yourrrr out!”

Lury switched sided hoping his luck would be better. His wish would not come true. After looking at a pitch in the dirt, he swung for one that made him look foolish. The next pitch bounced away to the backstop. Fetterhoff again wound up and delivered… swing and a miss. On the next pitch Lury made contact and smacked a week fly ball to where the first baseman hangs out, it was called out number two.

Hoping for a better result, Lury switched sides again, this time to his natural right-handed side. His luck would not change. He would swing and miss on pitch number one. Then he whiffed again. On the next pitch he popped it to the backstop, still down in the count, 0-2. One last chance to prove himself, Fetterhoff leaned back and delivered, a swing and a miss, her catcher popped out of her crouch and made the walk to the mound to congratulate her as a catcher would in a real game.

Lury’s little experiment was a failure. He made contact on only two pitches and struck out twice. Proof girls dominate the game of softball.

Video on newspaper sites

http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins/articles/2009/04/16/old_reliable/

This is a Boston Globe article on the Boston Bruins forward Mark Recchi. The Article describes how the oldest player on the Bruins plays a huge role, while the video attached does not even mention the players name. The story and video were not done by the same person, the same goes with most of the globes videos. Most of the videos are done by TV stations and not people that are involved with the writing of the story.

A great example of video by a newspaper is anything done by the New York Times.
If you go to the web page the lead story is the same as the lead video. The video does a great job telling exactly what you need to know and then the article tells you all the important things and some other facts as well.

IReport

Colby College Students Abused
This video looks like it was taken on someone's phone or maybe a small digital camera and was taken by someone involved in all of the ruckus. There is a story attached that explains what was going on. It is clear it is written by a student who was involved and is very protective of the students who were being arrested.
This does make for an interesting news story. Most students at Colby would be very interested in it. It is a good news piece but if I were a CNN producer it would most likely only air if it was a real slow news day or I was going after a college audience.
I am sure that anyone in our class could do the same thing, most likely better than this is.

The Dog ate it
This is not news. This is some guy with to much time on his hands making a video. It is his view on things and it is kind of funny, but its not news. THere is no way this would air on CNN. Once again I am sure that anybody could do the same thing and it would most likely be better.

Tax time
This slide show is kind of news. Not really however. It is a clever way of reminding people to do their taxes and giving this person's thought on the 'Taxman', it is clever and creative. However it would not be a good choice to run on CNN. THey also ran out of pictures and just used the same ones over and over again, kind of lame. Nice try though. It is well done, but I am sure that some people could do it better.

Willoughby Slideshow

Better late than never: Slideshow critique

http://www.nhl.com/ice/gallerylanding.htm?id=7059

This slideshow it the best photo's from the NHL and you see it by clicking here. Each picture has a caption, and the caption tells you what is happening in the photo. It is a decent storytelling tool, because in many of them something big is happening.
Like someone celebrating, that means they are excited and the other team is not. Or even action shots can tell you what is going to happen next, in the game that was being played.

Another Slideshow I used is the first one on this page, about the cicada's. THis slideshow also has captions and tells a story using sound. The sound that the bugs made all summer long, tells how annoying these bugs were. Instead of just a story about how noisy the bugs are, the Times decides to show us through this multimedia slideshow.

Critique of podcasts

ESPN Hockey today, The Melrose Line
This podcast is a weekly 25 to 40 minute long broadcast. ESPN hosts it with their hockey personalities. Barry Melrose is usually the main man and host Joy Russo asks questions about different teams and players. They discuss trade rumors, teams, and highlights. Unfortunately since it is a weekly pod cast the highlights and analysis gets out dated real quick.
It is a real professional sounding podcast that could pass as a radio show.
I already listen to this podcast almost every week and will most likely continue to listen after this assignment.

ESPN the Thundering Herd
This is a half hour podcast that is a recap of the best clips from the ESPN radio show “The Herd” hosted by Colin Cowherd. The pod cast is highlights from his show, his big interviews. On his show he talks sports and life. He often compares sports to real life, and athletes to people in the real world.
This being a radio version pod cast it is very professionally done with good sound effects and good interviews.
I often listen to “The Herd” and on days I miss the show I download the pod cast and listen to the highlights.

The B.S. Report
“The B.S. Report” is a pod cast hosted by writer Bill Simmons. It is not a daily podcast but often he does it multiple times a week. Simmons is a writer for ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine and has his own web site that ESPN hosts.
On his pod cast he talks sports and about the big things that are happening in the various leagues. He often has other writers come on and talk about topics that they are familiar with. A lot of times he has his friend on the podcast and they may not even touch on sports for half of the podcast. His podcast is hosted by ESPN, and the radio runs it and makes it like a radio quality broadcast. The sound quality is very professional and often the topics are professionally discussed, but often it is childish ramblings.
I read Simmons column every week, and sometimes if I want to get more in depth on a topic he writes about, I will listen to his podcast, so I will most likely listen to this again after this assignment.

More to Coaching Than Meets the Eye.

Building a competative college team takes a lot more effort than just coaching during the season. Coaches spend their offseason trying to recruit players to come to their school and play for their team, and at Lyndon its not that easy.

Full Story:

In collegiate sports the road to success starts well before the season does.

"Great players make good coaches great," said Vincent Maloney, The LSC women's baskestball coach. At a small school such as Lyndon, great players don't walk through the door, you have to go find them.

Setting up a network of high school, junior college, and prep school coaches is one of the keys to sucesfully recruiting athletes. These networks are usally with in the school's region. Most coaches at Lyndon will look for players through out New England, while larger, division one schools often recruit nation wide and sometimes internationally.

"Recruiting is selling," said Bill Johnson, the Lyndon State sports information director. Coaches need to sell the athlete on the small things that they can't get anywhere else but their school.

Joe Krupinski, the men's basketball coach at Lyndon State, says that he tries to sell the student on improvement of themselves as well as improvement of the team, telling them that they can be part of getting the school back on the winning track.

Chris Ummer, Lyndon States cross-country coach, tries to sell the athletes on their individual improvement. Most coaches will also try to sell the student on the area that suronds the campus.

Perhaps the biggest challenge is seeing the athlete play. Most high school seasons run at the same time as college seasons. This makes it difficult to recruit.

Krupinski said you need to focus on the current season while keeping the future in the back of your head at all times. So many coaches use the semester break to do the bulk of their recruiting.

"Students are very excited when a coach walks in to see them play," said Maloney.

Once the player is found by the coach, they begin sending letters, e-mails and then a phone call to schedule a campus visit.

According to Ummer, the key to getting a player is the campus visit. He tries to have current runners swing by and talk to the recruits, that way they feel like they are already part of the team and want to come to Lyndon.

LSC Profesor's Unharmed in Plane Crash (fake story)

An airliner crashed during takeoff on Thursday while leaving a New York airport. Two Lyndon State professors were on board and unharmed.

Two Lyndon State College Professors were among the 40 people who were unharmed during a plane crash on Thursday.

Phelps In Hot Water (blurb)

A South Carolina sheriff wants Michael Phelps jailed for his actions. That won't happen but he will be punished by the American Public.

Phelps in Hot Water

The sheriff in a South Carolina county believes that Michael Phelps should pay for smoking pot a college party.

A photo of the popular gold medalist smoking from what appeared to be a marijuana pipe appeared in a British tabloid recently. The sheriff does not seem to care that Phelps has more gold medals than any other person or that is public relations team wrote him an apologetic statement.

No where in the world are there enough jail cells to hold every person who thinks it is accpetable to smoke marijuana, and Phelps will not be jailed no matter how hard the Richland County sherifs office tries. Phelps has done enough damage to his reputation with out being sent to jail.

This is Phelps second tango with the law after winning golds at the Olympics. A few short months after the then 19-year old won six golds in Athens he was charged with driving under the influence. But his popularity regained itself after these past Olympics and Phelps was projecected to make $100 million in endorsements.

Even though most of his advertisers said they would stay with him, his image is hurt. The American public now has the image of Phelps with a bong pressed against his face burned into their memory. Phelps knows he will have to live with his decisions and wants to grow from it.

"By no means is it fun for me. By no means is it easy," he said to The Associated Press after a swim.

Blog is Pimped!

The first thing I did to my blog was find the template. The reason I picked the template I picked is because it is close to the colors of a beagle. I also added a few cool gadgets. The first I added was a sports photo of the day. I clicked on add gadget and then went to sports and picked the quotes gadget. I did the same with the sports quote. I also added a poll, asking what my grade should be for this assignment. I also added a blog roll, with the link to Dan's blog on it. And to top it off, the coolest gadget I added was the air hockey game at the very bottom of the blog.

And the final touch: Jambo!
