Willoughby Slideshow

Better late than never: Slideshow critique

http://www.nhl.com/ice/gallerylanding.htm?id=7059

This slideshow it the best photo's from the NHL and you see it by clicking here. Each picture has a caption, and the caption tells you what is happening in the photo. It is a decent storytelling tool, because in many of them something big is happening.
Like someone celebrating, that means they are excited and the other team is not. Or even action shots can tell you what is going to happen next, in the game that was being played.

Another Slideshow I used is the first one on this page, about the cicada's. THis slideshow also has captions and tells a story using sound. The sound that the bugs made all summer long, tells how annoying these bugs were. Instead of just a story about how noisy the bugs are, the Times decides to show us through this multimedia slideshow.

Critique of podcasts

ESPN Hockey today, The Melrose Line
This podcast is a weekly 25 to 40 minute long broadcast. ESPN hosts it with their hockey personalities. Barry Melrose is usually the main man and host Joy Russo asks questions about different teams and players. They discuss trade rumors, teams, and highlights. Unfortunately since it is a weekly pod cast the highlights and analysis gets out dated real quick.
It is a real professional sounding podcast that could pass as a radio show.
I already listen to this podcast almost every week and will most likely continue to listen after this assignment.

ESPN the Thundering Herd
This is a half hour podcast that is a recap of the best clips from the ESPN radio show “The Herd” hosted by Colin Cowherd. The pod cast is highlights from his show, his big interviews. On his show he talks sports and life. He often compares sports to real life, and athletes to people in the real world.
This being a radio version pod cast it is very professionally done with good sound effects and good interviews.
I often listen to “The Herd” and on days I miss the show I download the pod cast and listen to the highlights.

The B.S. Report
“The B.S. Report” is a pod cast hosted by writer Bill Simmons. It is not a daily podcast but often he does it multiple times a week. Simmons is a writer for ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine and has his own web site that ESPN hosts.
On his pod cast he talks sports and about the big things that are happening in the various leagues. He often has other writers come on and talk about topics that they are familiar with. A lot of times he has his friend on the podcast and they may not even touch on sports for half of the podcast. His podcast is hosted by ESPN, and the radio runs it and makes it like a radio quality broadcast. The sound quality is very professional and often the topics are professionally discussed, but often it is childish ramblings.
I read Simmons column every week, and sometimes if I want to get more in depth on a topic he writes about, I will listen to his podcast, so I will most likely listen to this again after this assignment.
